ES Literacy Night

York Prep invites our Elementary students and families to Literacy Night on October 16 from 5:00-7:00 pm at the elementary building. This FREE event is filled with interactive games, author visits, and a visit to our book fair. We will have food trucks available for purchase. York Prep Elementary is honored to welcome Dr. Kimberly P. Johnson to Literacy Night on October 16th! Author of 28 children's books, Dr. Johnson has made a monumental impact throughout her career.

NOTABLE BOOKS:

  • "No Fear for Freedom: The Story of the Friendship 9": This work gained national and international recognition when she helped spearheaded the efforts to have the sentences overturned for The Friendship 9, who conducted a sit-in in 1961 at a segregated lunch counter in Rock Hill.

  • "H.O.M.E. Hear Our Message Everyone – People Need a Home": The book aims to raise awareness about homelessness and generates funds for non-profits focused on this important issue.

  • “It Starts with Me”: Co-written with Dr. Bernice A. King, the last living daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, the story encourages the community to BE LOVE™.

NOTABLE EXPERIENCES:

  • Holds a Doctorate in Curriculum, Teaching, and Leadership from Northeastern University and completed post-doctoral work in the Advanced Leadership Program at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.

  • Serves as a faculty member at Clemson University and a course facilitator for "Leading Learning, Managing Evidence, and Leading with Equity and Excellence" at Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

  • Has been invited as a guest reader at an Easter event with President George Bush and interviewed on the Today Show, as well as featured in notable publications such as the London Times and Tokyo Shimbun.

  • Serves as an Ambassador for The King Center in Atlanta.

  • Has received numerous community awards including: the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary International, the York County Citizen of the Year Award, the Walker Solomon Award from the South Carolina Educators Association, the Omega Psi Phi Perseverance Award, the Carl Carpenter Gold Heart Award for Community and Educational Contributions, and the National Heritage Award.
