The South Carolina Educators Association, special interest groups and individuals inside our local school districts are circulating email messages that contain half-truths and misinformation about public charter schools and Bill 4243. To illustrate the point, we've included copies of their emails with explanations of what is true and what isn't (read full article).
Dr. Wayne Brazell, SCPCSD Superintendent, describes the campaign as
"the most vicious and misleading attacks I have ever witnessed."
The tactics and messages are old and tired. They are designed to scare the public and deny parents a choice within the public education system. They want to block the bill because it is an amendment to the state's Charter School Law and would provide public charter schools like York Preparatory Academy with sustainable funding.
This is a battle to maintain public support for public charter schools by educating our families, friends and neighbors. The truth is on our side, but we have to get it out to the community.

We are excited to announce our first book drive for the York Preparatory Academy Media Centers. We are in need of books for our Elementary (K-5) Media Center and our Middle/High School (6-12) Media Center. We will be collecting new and gently used books from Monday, March 8, 2010 to Monday, March 29, 2010.
We have several area businesses that have generously agreed to serve as designated drop off sites:
We are asking everyone to spread the word to family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, or anyone that may have books that they would like to donate. Donated books may be new or gently used; however, we ask that they are age appropriate and in overall good condition. We have attached a flyer that you can print out to distribute at church, work, or in your neighborhood. This would be a great family service project. Just fill in your contact information, distribute the flyer, collect the books, and deliver to one of our drop-off sites. Also, if you have books that you would like to donate and cannot get them to one of our drop off locations, please email

Welcome! My name is Corey Helgesen and I am the Managing Director of York Preparatory Academy!
Each month, “The Managing Director’s Perspective”, will be issued to inform our community of the direction and progress that is being made toward YPA school programs and services. You’re invited to partake in this message each month. Also, the YPA website has several tabs intended to provide in-depth awareness of what YPA’s mission and goals are and how they have been designed to be a service to the surrounding community. In addition, you will find past and current events that pertain to YPA on this site. We invite all to participate in the navigation of YPA’s school site, as many of your questions may be addressed by doing so.

The mission of the York Preparatory Academy (YPA) is for the faculty, staff,students, parents, and community to provide an engaged learning environment that leads to the success of each individual student, while also challenging these students to become life-long learners, independent thinkers, respectful individuals, and responsible citizens thus preparing them for a 21st century global economy.
With this mission, in accordance with the South Carolina Charter Schools Act, YPA will:
- Improve student learning
- Increase learning opportunities
- Utilize productive teaching methods
- Establish new forms of accountability for schools
- Create new professional opportunities for teachers
